How to Enjoy the Outdoors and Avoid the Pollen

Sneezing, coughing and watery eyes can make it difficult to enjoy the nice weather in Los Angeles, but these simple tips will help ease your symptoms.

Relieve Seasonal Allergy Symptoms

Reducing your exposure to allergens throughout the day can significantly reduce your symptoms.

  1. Cover your eyes. Wearing sunglasses can protect your eyes from pollen and other allergens, which will reduce the amount your eyes water.
  2. Cover your hair. Especially if you tend to not wash your hair everyday, wearing a hat or headband can reduce the amount of pollen that collects in your hair.
  3. Try over the counter allergy medicine. Antihistamines that don’t include sedatives, such as Benadryl, can be taken during the day so you don’t get drowsy. Other over the counter allergy medications include Claritin, Sudafed, and Visine for eye allergy relief.
  4. Breathe through your nose. Breathing in through your nose can help minimize allergy symptoms by lowering the amount of dry air entering your lungs.
  5. Avoiding sitting in your clothes after being outside. If you suffer from spring allergies, make sure you put your clothes in the laundry and take a shower to avoid dragging allergens around the house.

Allergy Immunotherapy Treatments

First, your LA ENT will determine which allergens are causing your symptoms. Allergy symptoms are your body’s immune system attacking the allergy. During allergy immunotherapy treatments, a small amount of the allergen is put into your body and the dose is increased over time. Slowly, the immune system makes an antibody that stops allergens from causing symptoms.

Allergy shots

Sublingual immunotherapy works the same way to introduce your body to a small amount of the allergen in order to relieve allergy symptoms. This is a form of immunotherapy where liquid drops are dissolved under your tongue several times a week or daily. The drops can be taken at home, but it is important to take it every day, or the treatment may not help reduce your symptoms. You’ll typically continue taking the allergy drops for three to five years.

Both allergy shots and allergy drops can improve allergy and asthma symptoms and less then need to take medicines.
