Q&A with Shelby Bowman:
What Do You Do In Your Time Off?
I enjoy taking Pilates and spin classes. I'm also learning to swim so I can compete in a triathlon within the next year or so. I love a good dinner and movie night, too. Being from Austin, my favorite theater is the Alamo Drafthouse because of its great food and themed movie nights.
What Defines Your Personality?
My personality is rooted in empathy, which drives me to connect deeply with my patients. It is equally defined by a commitment to both my craft as a doctor and my patients, where precision and care go hand in hand.
Why did you choose a career in medicine?
I have always wanted to dedicate my life to helping others live fulfilling lives. Surgery, particularly in the mouth and face, enables me to achieve this goal by restoring pain-free function in cases of tooth loss, facial trauma, TMJ issues, and more.
Charities & Causes That You Are Passionate About
I believe the foundation of a thriving society is ensuring everyone has access to basic needs, such as food, housing, and healthcare. I often volunteer or contribute to causes that support feeding or housing those in need.
Favorite Procedures or Surgeries You Like to Perform
While I enjoy performing larger surgeries such as TMJ replacements, orthognathic surgeries, and tumor resections, I also find great satisfaction in removing teeth, especially those causing patients pain. It’s incredibly rewarding!
Goals that you have either personally, professionally or both
I would like to run a triathlon within the next two years, and I am also hoping to get board certified next year.
Most influential mentor you've worked with
My first mentor in oral and maxillofacial surgery was Ed Ellis, a renowned author in the field. He taught me that it is possible to be both extremely accomplished and yet remain humble, empathetic, and accountable.
